Cycle 300 Miles in June

I'm taking on the Cycle 300 Miles in June Challenge

In May 2024, I started getting abdominal discomfort. I blamed my desk, my chair, my screen height, tweaking each one day after day, looking for a fix. Eventually, my wife convinced me to see a GP. Two PSA tests later, the Cancer Centre at Guy’s moved fast: MRI within 10 days, biopsy the week after, and by October I’d had a radical prostatectomy. I’d caught prostate cancer at Stage 2. I was 52, had no symptoms and, like most people, never thought it would happen to me.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men. And if you’re over 50, or you’re Black, or you have a family history of the disease, then your risk is even higher. But the earlier you find it, the easier it is to treat. If I’d procrastinated longer, if my GP hadn’t been so proactive, the situation may have been much more serious. So the first step is to get yourself checked by your GP.

When it comes to prostate cancer, early diagnosis is crucial. Because when you find it early, it's much easier to treat. That's why a screening programme is so important. PCR needs your help to fund research, to find the safest and most accurate way to test for prostate cancer and pave the way to a much bigger screening programme that saves thousands of lives.

I’m now taking on 💥 Prostate Cancer Research’s Cycle 300 miles in June Challenge 💥  to raise money for the 1 in 8 men in the UK diagnosed with this disease. If you can support me with a donation, I’d be really grateful.

Thank you for your support! 💙🧡

Passing 300 miles

Friday 26th Jun
This week I passed the 300 mile mark.
Quite simply, there’s enough time to push on to 400, so I will. 🙂

Passing 200 miles

Sunday 14th Jun

The support and donations have been astounding. I can’t thank you all enough. It’s made the challenge all the more emotional. I was one of the lucky ones, my diagnosis was caught early and treated swiftly. Others are less lucky. All your donations go towards supporting the men and families caught up in prostate cancer.

I've made some excellent progress knocking off the miles. I passed the 200 mile mark on Friday 12th June which was a relief. It feels like I can enjoy the last 100 or perhaps even push on from there. Who knows. Thanks to Phil who cycled with me from Welwyn Garden City to Cambridge the other w-e. Not heard from him since though…

The Deer Hunter

Saturday 30th May

Final run around today. Spent it with the hinds, stags and calves of Richmond Park. Another 30° circuit. It’ll be a relief for the forecasted rain across June…

I can now ride a bike and I have the kit! On Monday the clock starts ticking. Rob told me today that in his youth, he was doing 180 miles a day. Something to aim for.

Thanks again for all your donations. This disease should be tested for to save lives. It isn’t. So, you men should demand a check up from your GP.

Thank you

Tuesday 26th May
Thanks so much for all the generous donations. I really appreciate it, as will the men and families PCR work with.

Just to clarify, May is not June and the training miles completed in May will be removed before the start of June. It appears there's a glitch in the system.

A few circuits of Battersea Park today in 35° and I felt like I’d done 300 miles!
