I'm taking on the Run 50 Miles in October Challenge

Did you know that 1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime?

I’m taking on the Run 50 Miles in October Challenge for Prostate Cancer Research to change this and help make a difference to men and their families who have been affected by prostate cancer.

Please support me during this challenge by donating what you can to Prostate Cancer Research. Every donation you make helps advance our mission to create a world free from the impact of prostate cancer.

Thank you for your support! 💙🧡

Half way (and a bit)

45km in the bag (of the 80.5km needed)

1.5 weeks into October.

I should be feeling extremely positive about, not only finishing this, but finishing it early...however, to quote GOT, Winter is coming!

In the last week I've needed to get a light (so I can be seen, since it appears all my running gear is black! Is "Goth Runner" a fashion choice?) and a jacket (because it's bloody cold and wet all the time and running in a duffle coat wasn't an option)

Clothing and accessories aside, encouraging my body to do things it wasn't built for, is hard at the best of times. Encouraging it to do them in objectively unpleasant conditions is another thing entirely.

Now is the winter of my discontent...and it's going to get worse before it gets better.

What if….

Saturday 3rd Oct
So October is underway! Contrary to the data on this page, I’m not half way through my mileage since it appears to be picking up data from back in September. Two days in, I’m 5 miles down, 45 miles to go!

The start of this was already looking hairy. Last weekend I was sick and had three days where running, or really doing anything apart from sleeping, wasn’t a possibility. It’s the longest gap in my running that I’ve had since July. No brisk walk, no gentle recovery run, no nothing! Crucially, no miles logged!!

Getting into autumn, I realise the germs are marshaling their forces, whilst I’m wondering if they could be the thing that derails this effort? I survived the first skirmish, but need to be consistently well this month to gradually notch up the miles. Having to blast out a marathon in the last two days would absolutely suck, not to mention probably destroy any chance of running from November onwards.

And it’s not just germs; injury, busyness, even failing to stay on top of washing my running gear. There are so many things that can effect this goal….fingers crossed!

Nearly October

Sunday 20th Sep
I've been running more or less every day since July and I'm working up to a half-marathon (don't tell anyone yet...I might not make it!) Anyway, I thought 50 miles in a month was a great way to raise from money to support Prostate Cancer Research, whilst also being pretty easily manageable within my existing running.

Then I remembered that there's a difference between miles and kilometers!

I don't really think in miles when I'm running, everything in is km and 50 km would be dead easy...

80.5 km (aka 50 miles) is a much higher number. This is going to be more of a challenge after all!!

Having run with you in PE lessons 30 years ago when you were in your prime... I know how much of a challenge and how difficult this will be for you! However, I know you will make it. Let's hope your running as improved as much as your maths has declined! Xx
