I'm taking on the Run 50 Miles in October Challenge

Did you know that 1 in 8 men in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime?

I’m taking on the Run 50 Miles in October Challenge for Prostate Cancer Research to change this and help make a difference to men and their families who have been affected by prostate cancer.

Please support me during this challenge by donating what you can to Prostate Cancer Research. Every donation you make helps advance our mission to create a world free from the impact of prostate cancer.

Thank you for your support! 💙🧡

First 10 mile run - smashed it!

This is some journey from restarting C25K in January, first Parkrun in April, first sprint triathlon in May, first 10k around the inspiring Mounts Bay in June, first 10k race in September and now first 10 mile run in October.

50 miles in October smashed - 53 miles so far!

Today started with a 50 mile cycle crossing the Thames at Goring and Pangbourne with the Interval run sandwiched between two sighting of Flying Scotsman 😳

Run 10a & 10b Parkrun and run home

Saturday 17th Oct
A chilly but sunny Greenham Common Parkrun followed by a 5K run home. Adding another 10.2K to my total, which is now 62.5km (38.8 miles) and well on track to exceed the 50 mile target.

I set off on the parkrun thinking steady run, got boxed in but completed the first 1k on track for a sub 30 5K. Then I spied Fiona ahead of me and eased passed her, she came back, so the race was on. Into Km 5 she was ahead on the drag towards the pickle factory, I wasn't having this, so eased up a gear and passed her again, before making sure with a trademark kick at the end which got a response from those around me to finish strong and importantly Fiona got a massive PB too!

My reward, I had to run home.

I Finished my run home at Monkey Marsh Lock and crossed the lock to explore the pill box. It is part of 130 built along the Kennet and Avon canal in 1940 to defend against a potential German invasion.

Run 9 - Thatcham lakes

Thursday 15th Oct
Another 5k ticked off.

That brings me to 52.3 km (32.5 miles) completed so far for Prostate Cancer Research.

Run 6 - 5Km - Greenham Common Parkrun

Saturday 10th Oct

A nip in the air this morning, some sun and a bit of a head wind after the turn. But should be a Parkrun PB.

The parkrun starts on a remaining section of RAF Greenham Common runway which during the cold war was thought to be one of the longest runways in Europe.

In late 1983 three Greenham Peace Woman broke into the control tower and signed the visitors book. They used search lights to draw attention to themselves and hoped the British police would get to them before the Americans. This was shortly after Defence Secretary Michael Heseltine had stated that the base was secure and that protesters could never access sensitive areas.

Run 5: Intervals

Thursday 8th Oct
Run 5: 2 mile Interval run
50 mile cycle this morning out to Albourne where the band of brothers were based. Then this evening a 3.2km (2 mile) interval run along the canal. Those intervals are getting faster!

Run 4: 12.5K from Cold War to Star Wars

Tuesday 6th Oct

Run 4: 12.5K Cold War to Star Wars

Tuesday 6th Oct
A misty run this morning starting at the swing bridge, running along the K&A towards Newbury,  up to Greenham Common via the bridleway at the back of the Racecourse,  a lap of Greenham and Crookham Common,  with photo stop at the Gama bunkers, built in the 1980s to house US nuclear cruise missiles, where the Greenham Peace Woman danced on top of the bunkers on New Years Day 1983 and  Star Wars: The Force Awakens was filmed.

Highclere castle 10k done!

Tuesday 29th Sep
I am taking on the run 50 miles in October challenge as well as a series of other cancer research charity challenge over the summer as my father in law had been diagnosed with cancer in 2021 and sadly he lost his battle with cancer in August.

In January 2025 I started my C25K with the aim of doing my first triathlon in May 2025, however a prostate issue scuppered that and I postponed my entry. So in January 2026 i started C25K again, I received a clean bill of health in March and got back in the pool and on my bike and completed the triathlon in May!

Parkrun then became a regular activity, achieving my first sub 30 5K in August. Regular swims in the Newbury Lido and with Newbury Velo swim club followed as well as many bike rides. Another Triathlon at the start of September and today my first 10K around the hilly grounds of Highclere Castle!
